37.5” overall, 22” partial octagonal breech to round barrel flaring like blunderbuss to 1”. Lock is marked “WHATELY”. John Whately is listed as Birmingham gunmaker from 1734-1767. Gun is brass mounted with thin tacked on buttplate, 3 screw serpentine sideplate is a type found in American archaeological sites of early 18th century (see Evolution of Serpent Sideplate in Hamilton’s Colonial Frontier Guns). An identical example of this blunderbuss is shown on page 190 of Battle Weapons of the American Revolution by George Neumann.
