FINE & EXTRA FANCY AMES PRESENTATION FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD WITH ENGRAVED CAMP SCENE
inv # 02-14537
This is a beautiful sword w/ fancy engraved pommel & brass capstan rivet, extra engraving on knuckle bow. The 30.5″ blade is a rarely seen reused government inspected blade w/ extra long 24″ etched panels of Ames’ highest grade w/ fine “spider web” embellishments among the patriotic motifs. Scabbard mounts are also engraved front & back. Obverse at throat has a camp scene w/ tents, a soldier & cannon. Reverse engraved “CAPT. / W.B FOWLE JR / 43 REG. M.V. / FROM COLUMBIAN LODGE / SEPT. 30 1862”. William B. Fowle (1826-1902) after the War was mayor of Newton, Mass. It seems that politicians were always given these extra fancy swords & we know of no other Ames model 1850 like this one.
