Bbl. 24″. This unique and high condition rifle was converted at Springfield Armory to test the concept of a high velocity small caliber cartridge as being more lethal than the standard issue 30 caliber cartridges. The rifles were converted from standard service model by fitting them with a newly manufactured barrel. These barrels were marked “SINGLE, DUPLEX AND TRIPLEX” according to the load they were designed for. The single bullet load was supposed to propel a 50 grain bullet at 3500 fps. This rifle for the single bullet load appears to have been unissued at the time it was rebarreled. According to “The M1 Garand Rifle” by Bruce Canfield the serial numbers should be in the 6,000,000 range however this example S342851 manufactured in 1954 is 657149 units previous. The .22 caliber barrel is marked on the right side “SA F38536 8142 4344 9 58 T B ” “CAL 22-06 SINGLE 1-12 ” & DOD proof. Bolt is marked “6528287-SA A13”. Late type aperture rear sight.
