Extremely rare, Union officer’s double-breasted shell jacket w/ wonderful quatrefoil decoration on sleeves, slouch hat w/ cavalry insignia, sash & sword belt. There is also a pocket sized New Testament w/ Savage’s penciled name and original bill-of-sale.

Edward G. Savage (1829-1891) born in England, was engineer in Harrisburg, PA prior to enlisting as Captain, Company F, 10th Pa. Infantry, a 3 month unit. After muster-out, Savage was commissioned Captain of Company B, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Promoted to major March 19, 1863, & Lt. Col. May 30, 1864. He resigned September 26, 1864. The 9th PA Cavalry saw numerous actions while in the Army of Ohio, they were crucial at the battle of Lebanon, Tennessee battling w/ John Hunt Morgan’s Cavalry. After Morgan’s surrender, 9th moved to Nashville as part of the Army of the Cumberland. The 9th was involved in numerous skirmishes before & after the battle of Chickamauga & then moved into East Tennessee fighting around Knoxville. Lt. Col. Savage would resign before the Atlanta campaign. After returning to Harrisburg, PA, Savage worked as a foundryman.
