Circa 1887. Oil on mahogany panel depicting an Arabic gentleman in white hooded robe with staff inspecting an oriental carpet at an outdoor bizarre. Housed in a nice 19th century gilt gesso frame and signed and dated lower left “A.J. Franke/Muenchen/-87-“. Franke was born in 1860. He studied at Breslau Academy and later at the Munich Academy. He traveled widely in North Africa in 1885-1887 and images created during that time period and his Arabian scenes such as this are the most desirable of all his works. Some of his works have brought over $60,000 at auction in recent years.
SIZE: Painting is 13 3/4″ x 10 1/2″. Overall is 26″ x 22 3/4″.
