Tranter lg. bore military pistols were popular worldwide. In the serial range about 8,000-9,000, the handful of specimens known are mostly New Orleans agent marked such as this & 2 are among the most important Confederate associated examples. S# 8673 was presented to Confederate Gen. Jeb Stuart. from Heroes von Borcke in Culpeper, VA. June, 1863 (this example is in the Smithsonian). S# 7993 is elaborately engraved to Confederate Gen. Dabney Maury also w/ New Orleans agent marking.
