We have a fantastic selection of firearms & militaria to be offered in our upcoming May 7, 8, & 9th, 2018 Premier Firearms Auction. Items featured in this auction range from early martial arms & militaria to modern sporting guns from collections across the U.S. & Canada.
An interesting item that we will be offering in the auction is an E.P. Bond of London Pattern 1853 Enfield musket with Massachusetts Civil War history. This historic Enfield was imported by the world famous outfitter Tiffany & Company. The musket was stamped on the tang of the buttplate, “39” and “44 H MASS”. Because the stamps are individual letters and numbers, this is likely a field numbered replacement musket. The markings indicate the musket was purchased by the State of Massachusetts and issued to the 44th Massachusetts Infantry. This example exhibits the appropriate patina and wear that one would expect to see on an original musket that saw service during the Civil War.
The 44th Massachusetts was a 9 month regiment organized in Readville, part of the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston. The regiment commenced their service in September of 1862 outfitted with Enfield rifles and British accoutrements. Soon after organizing, the regiment was moved to New Bern, NC, where it participated in numerous battles and skirmishes around the state. In June of 1863 the regiment returned to Boston and was mustered out. During service the regiment suffered 41 casualties, 11 of which were battle related.
